Workshops for Early Years:

'Who In The Sea Could The Best Creature Be?' gives young children a fun and memorable experience that helps them to ‘understand the world’ - one of the four learning and development requirements of the DfE Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The session is set up in the style of a talent. With the use of puppets, children will meet three ocean characters; Magnus the Shark, Tyler the turtle and Mia the seahorse who each tell the class amazing facts about themselves.

The session incorporates different props and games in order to keep the children active and engaged. For example a recycling game will invite the children to help clean up the sea by finding the ocean litter scattered around and putting them in the correct bins.

This is a great session to introduce young children to marine life and the issues that it faces, in a fun and engaging way.

KS1: Commotion in the Ocean (30 minutes)

Commotion in the Ocean explores animals that live in very different environments and what adaptations they have developed to help them cope with their surroundings.

Your class will compare the adaptations of an Antarctic penguin with those of a tropical seahorse to further their understanding of why different animals look the way they do and how their body is designed to help them hide, find food, defend themselves from predators, fight and much more.

To wrap it all up they will be tasked with designing their own, new to science, sea creatures using our cartoon creature packs and the knowledge they have gained during their session.

Students will:

  • Learn about the different oceans of the world and should understand that animals within these oceans differ
  • Learn that animals have different adaptations to survive in the habitats that they live in
  • Be able to apply what they have learnt about habitats and adaptations to design their own marine animal

KS2: UNDERSEA BRITAIN (60 Minutes)

Undersea Britain gives children the opportunity to discuss different habitats and adaptations as well as looking specifically at some of the fabulous marine life found right here in British waters.

Can your class identify which species are found in local waters and which live somewhere else entirely? We will also test their ability to use flow charts and have a go at classifying different marine species. You’ve probably already learned about mammals, birds and reptiles, but have you ever heard of a crustacean, echinoderm or cnidarian?

By the end of this session you’ll be an expert in identifying all three groups! Your class will finish by getting creative and designing their own magnificent marine creatures using our cartoon creature packs and the knowledge they have gained during their session.

Students will:

  • Understand that the waters around Britain contain a large diversity of marine life
  • Learn that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways according to common characteristics and based on similarities and differences
  • Be able to explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things

KS3: UNDERWATER WORLD TOUR (45 Minutes)

A guided tour around some of the main aquarium displays. Our expert Guest Experience team will explain why a Green Sea turtle is green? What extra senses do sharks have to help them hunt? Why are there no baby girl Clownfish? Why don’t crocodiles ever run out of teeth, and much much more!

This tour can be adapted for different age groups but in particular is recommended for Key Stage 3 and above. With a minimum of one month’s notice, this may be tailored to cover areas of specific interest; for example focusing on marine threats and conservation, hunting adaptations or camouflage.

Students will:

  • Visit a variety of different habitats around the globe and will be able to identify these places on the globe
  • Be able to compare animals from different habitats, looking at their different characteristics and why they may have these
  • Be able to look closer at artefacts, such as a turtle shell, to build a greater connection with the ocean and improve understanding of marine animals

KS2 - KS4: BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR (45 Minutes)

Team up with our expert aquarist guides to go deep behind the scenes at SEA LIFE London Aquarium and discover how we care for over 600 marine and fresh-water species.

You’ll have privileged access to the working areas usually closed to the public where you can learn about our extensive breeding, research and conservation programmes and see how the fish food is prepared!

Students will:

  • Understand more about the running of an aquarium
  • Learn about Quarantine and the reasons that animals may be located in this area
  • Understand issues that the team could potentially face daily and what it takes resolve these issues
  • Learn about the food that we give to the different animals, and the importance of a nutritious diet for our animals

Sensory Sessions

For groups with disabilities or special requirements we offer the opportunity to come in before we open to the public for a private tour around the main aquarium displays with a team of our Guest Experience staff. As you travel through an empty aquarium at your own pace, our expert staff will not only wow you with incredible creature facts but also pass around fascinating objects to give your group the opportunity to stroke a real sea turtle shell, inspect an alligator’s teeth and discover what real shark skin feels like.

In order to give your group this exclusive access these sessions are limited to 9am on off-peak, weekday mornings.
